Absolutely! We all started as beginners at one point! The benefits of learning with the HEAT is the patience and quality of coaching from Pat & Liz, and the support from your teammates. The goal is to have you fall in love with paddling just as we have.
No. While the majority of the paddlers live in the Villages, the HEAT team members are from other parts of Florida, and from all across the country. Many paddlers come to the HEAT because of 1) the second-to-none, professional training the team receives from Pat and Liz Bradley and 2) the opportunity to race internationally.
We practice Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00am to 9:00am at Lake Miona Park, 10501 CR 115, Oxford, FL 34484. We warm-up beginning at 7:30am.
Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting wet.
Shoes: Wear shoes that are stable but that you don't mind getting wet.
PFDs (Personal Flotation Device): Beginners will be able to borrow life vests. Most paddlers get the 'belt' or 'waist' variety for less restricted movement.
Seat pads and Paddles: Beginners will be able to borrow seat pads and paddles. Coaches will provide new paddlers with guidance on purchasing paddles.
Water bottle: You work up a sweat paddling and it's important to stay hydrated! Water bottles are highly encouraged to bring on the boat during practices.
Others: Hat/sunglasses/sunscreen.
Yes! We have several members who paddle and race with us part time.
